Best one yet! Alsager Christmas Market & Lights Switch On

On Sunday 24th November Alsager saw a crowd of approximately 10,000 visitors to the town for their annual Christmas Market & Lights Switch On... and what a Switch On it was!

This is one time of the year that several community groups join forces to deliver a spectacle in the town that has now gained the reputation of being the biggest and best Lights Switch on in Cheshire East.

Sunday's event featured close to 100 Christmas themed market gift and food sellers, on-stage entertainment that was hosted by Signal Radio Presenters Maxine Mallen and Stu Haycock, fireworks, fairground rides and Santa's Grotto.  Performances on the night included Alsager Community Choir, Alsager School Award-Winning Chamber Choir, Crewe Brass Band and local singer Katie Barlow.

On the night local residents, Carrie Dempsey and Lorraine Standring were awarded Alsager Round Table's Community Spirit Award for taking lead roles in fundraising to support Alsager School pupil, Robert Brennan, who was struck down with swine flu, sepsis and pneumonia last year.

At one minute before 6pm, the countdown to the big switch-on started and a spectacular fireworks display followed to Land of Hope & Glory played by Crewe Brass Band.

This event is organised by Alsager's Christmas Event Committee, which is supported by Alsager Partnership, Alsager Round Table and PME Ltd.  Other groups involved are the Alsager branch of Ladies Tangent who managed hundreds of children visiting Santa's Grotto.

Event organiser, Maria Ashdown, Project Manager for Alsager Partnership said, 'This year was 100% the biggest and best switch on yet, the town was bursting at the seams and with so many organisations that come together to support the delivery of this, it really is a team effort that we can all be very proud of.  This event not only brings smiles to the faces of visitors, but it supports local trade, charities and community groups that have a stall on the night and benefit financially.  It also continues to drive Alsager Partnership's vision to make Alsager a chosen destination to live, work, socialise and visit'.

The event sponsor this year was Alsager's very own The Honey Pot Tea Room (home of events and party planning) and Alsager's Christmas Tree was sponsored, once again, by The Dutton Group based in Middlewich.  Huge thanks to these two businesses, who helped to make the event possible.
